Happy Mother’s Day everyone. This special day makes it an auspicious start to a new week and I hope everyone has a chance to do something special for their wife and mom. The past few days were definitely interesting, and here are the highlights. A couple of media mentions Moolanomy received a couple of media mentions. Although most of these don’t make a huge difference in term of readership, it feels great to be noticed: AZCentral.com 12 News mentions 10 Ways New Parents Overspend On Their Newborns in their Money saving secrets article. The Morning Mix also mentioned the baby article ... (more)

In the past few years, Americans average savings rate has declined precipitously — in fact the current savings rate is practically zero. This means that as a society, we are not saving any money. Worse, we have a habit of borrowing to fuel our consumption. We are spending more than we earn, and that’s a recipe for financial disaster. In this article I’d like to present a potential road map to restore your financial health. Recognizing the problem and having the determination to fix it I believe self-awareness is an important first step in any endeavor. Personal ... (more)

Money management is a tedious endeavor for many of us. It takes a significant amount of time and energy to keep track of expenses, come up with a balanced budget, and figure out ways to save money. Personally, I put my finances on autopilot and don’t worry about these things. However, I have been enjoying the greater level of financial clarity ever since I started using Mint.com. Put Your Expense Tracking On Autopilot It’s surprisingly easy to get started with Mint. The first major step is to add my financial accounts to the system –- i.e., banking, credit ... (more)

Mother’s Day 2008 is Sunday, May 11th. Do you have something picked out for your mom yet? When it comes to buying gift, I am pretty lousy. I always feel overwhelmed and usually scramble at the last minute. This Mother’s Day, I would like to do something special for three moms — i.e., my mom, my wife (on behalf of my son), and her mom. But as usual I have no idea where to start. Personally, I am not too thrilled about chocolates and flowers — although my wife loves Godiva chocolates. So, I have been looking ... (more)

Net Worth Review We definitely saw good recovery in April, but you really have to ask how much more can the Fed cuts interest rates. The S&P 500 index went up +4.75% from 1322.70 to 1385.59. According to NetworthIQ, my net worth actually went up +1.70% and net investable assets went up +6.22%, or from 22.09% to 23.47% of $1 million goal — overall, an excellent month. Highlights My overall alternative income from blogging grew 13%. My peer-to-peer investments grew: Prosper grew from $340.56 to $425.55 with 7 loans at an average interest rate of 11.69%. Again, average interest rate dropped further this ... (more)

Neither one of my parents know how to invest in the stock market, and it wasn’t a part of my formal education. I had to learn everything on my own, so I know how intimidating it is for people who are new to investing. Where do I start? What do I invest in? How am I doing? There are just so many questions. In this post, I am going to try to make it as easy as possible for someone brand new to investing to get started. 1. Money That You Can Afford To Lose Investing is unlike putting money ... (more)

I missed work yesterday because I was a victim of road rage (ironically, after I wrote about safe driving last week). Someone felt it was acceptable to block two lanes of a three lanes highway, get out of his car, open my door and start beating me.  As the closing blow he slammed the door in my face and left a huge dent on my door with a swift kick. The reason?  I didn’t let him merge back onto the highway after he sneaked onto the entrance ramp to selfishly pass about a dozen cars in front of him. It could ... (more)

With the recent increases in gas price, everyone is feeling the pinch. What used to be a $30 fill up is now $40. And every household budget is in crisis from the rising gas price, along with everything else. So, I figure this is a good time to share some money saving tips. Save Money On Car Purchases If you have a car, keep the car longer if it’s still in good working order. If you need a car, buy a used car. Buy a fuel efficient car. For both parents and students, off-to-school shopping can be an important financial lesson that should be shared. It is a prime opportunity for parents to get to teach their kids a few remaining lessons about budgeting and personal finance: two very important lessons college kids should be learning before leaving the nest. Here are fifteen tips that will help both parents and students stay on track and avoid a credit disaster when shopping for the basics and the luxuries before heading to the dorm: 1. Take Inventory Before even hitting the malls, take stock of what is already at home. Sure it is ... (more)

When I started blogging, I’d never thought that my writing could possibly impact anyone. Above all else, it was a way for me to learn more about money management. It was more about me than it was about others. This all changed last Friday, when I read a blog post from Cootiehog: Monthly Bill Reduction - How We Did It. In my last post I talked about how I was able to not only restore our Disney fund but send in a huge tithe AND pay off almost 20% of my credit card debt. You may wonder HOW I ... (more)

This article is not meant to convince you to try credit card arbitrage — rather, it’s meant to start a discussion around it. Ultimately, I would like to hear your thought on credit card arbitrage as a money making strategy. First, we start off with a little background information. What Is Credit Card Arbitrage? Credit Card Arbitrage is a strategy where the arbitrager borrows money from credit cards that offers 0% APR for a certain amount of time (usually 6 or 12 months). For example, these cards offer no-fee 0% APR transfer: Clear from American Express Pulaski Bank Gold Visa® Card IberiaBank Visa® Platinum Rewards Card ESPN ... (more)
