It’s like the line, “it’s not what you make, it’s what you save” quote that’s thrown around so often has finally sunk in. I used to think that to be “rich” required having a high paying job. But now, I’m realizing that that isn’t necessarily true. Back in November I stopped working for my highest paying [...] ... (more)

Well… that was quick! I filed my taxes on Sunday morning. Monday was a holiday. Tuesday was, well, a Tuesday. By Wednesday, the State had already direct deposited my refund. How about that? That’s a 1 business day turnaround! Amazing what can be done when it’s 100% online. Mmm…technology… Now let’s see if the the federal side still [...] ... (more)

Last night my wife set-up online billpay with her bank and is now contributing $25 every two weeks towards the mortgage. This is in addition to the $125 per week I’ve been contributing since the start of the year. Now, while $25/week may not sound like a lot (and really, it’s not), it DOES make [...] ... (more)

Okay, so yesterday I mentioned that we filed our taxes over the weekend and we’re due $2643 Federal and $801 State. Not too shabby. I know, I know… That’s like giving the government an interest free loan. But we have our reasons. It’s the patriotic thing to do. No, actually, the primary reason is that we don’t pay taxes [...] ... I filed my taxes yesterday. The past few years I’ve flip-flopped back and fourth from TaxCut to Turbotax and back again. And each year I’m convinced that I’ve made the wrong decision. The 2007 tax year happened to be a TurboTax year in my house. I like TurboTax. I like how it has neat little [...] ... (more)

As always, there has been a lot of debate about whether or not it is wise to pay off your mortgage early. JD’s post on Get Rich Slowly yesterday, and the comments on it inspired this post. Last summer I started sending an additional $25/week towards the principle on my mortgage. Then, at the tail end [...] ... (more)

As I peruse all of my banking websites this morning, I’m finally starting to notice rates dropping in accordance with the fed rate drops over the past few weeks. Citi, Chase, Bank of America… Okay, well, not Bank of America, but I think they’ll come through eventually. It’s nice to see credit card rates dropping from 17.99% [...] ... (more)

It’s about time. As a frequent eBay buyer, I can pay with Paypal seconds after winning an auction and then wait weeks for my item to arrive. At that point, I don’t dare leave negative feedback for the delayed shipping. I can’t. They’ll tag me with a negative right back. [...] ... (more)

January finished with a very impressive and unexpected 8% networth increase. Things progressed nicely on the liabilites end of things and that was expected. Total credit card balances are now under $5k, and I’d have to say it’s been over a decade since I was last able to say that. It feels good and I can [...] ... (more)

Okay, so January isn’t quite over yet, but you get the idea. I didn’t really have any New Year’s resolutions, but I did lay down a few goals for 2008 and I guess now is as good a time as any to see if things are still on track… Eliminate all credit card debt by the end of [...] ... (more)

This morning at work I walked into a heated conversation between two co-workers about how “things” are going up, but no one is getting paid more. I kept quiet, wisely, as I passed through, but the gears in my head were turning. True, no one at my place of employment is getting paid more. Okay, maybe [...] ... (more)

With a big day ahead of us, Brainy Smurf is predicting the DJIA to drop 515 points today. I’ll even go out on a limb and say that the intra-day low will be down 700 points — shortly after the market opens only to recover later in the day. I don’t like it. I [...] ... (more)

I was never really terribly impressed by the hula-hoop. Magic Sand held my interest for about 15 minutes. Slip ‘N Slide was painful. And though I spent countless hours playing ultimate frisbee in university, I never could throw a frisbee very accurately. I guess I was just more of a yo-yo fan — and those were manufactured by a [...] ... (more)

The last time I did this was back in June of 2007 and I thought that with just having eliminated two credit card balances recently, it might be a good time to go back and see how the landscape has changed. This is a list of my open credit card accounts as of January 2008: Bank of [...] ... (more)

Good news on the horizon for business owners in Connecticut it seems! I’ve read numerous places that the best way to become wealthy is to own your own business. Well, I’ve done that, and while I have earned a lot of additional income over the years, there have always been drawbacks. In Connecticut, the [...] ... (more)

I’m pretty proud of myself. On December 17th, the balance on my CitiBank AT&T Universal MasterCard was $5000. This morning, this being a pay day, it’s at $0. Even better, it was less than a month ago that I eliminated my balance on my Bank of America Business Card. Two credit cards gone in the span of [...] ... (more)

Ack! When I first saw the headline, I thought to myself, “Could this be true? Can one of my childhood heroes guilty of such a thing?” But then I clicked the link and saw that it was just some thug football player in a strip club. Phew… And I wonder how he got the nickname “Pacman”. [...] ... (more)

Last night, my wife and I attended our first Village Association meeting. What the hell is that? Well, think, town hall meeting, but a lot less formal. We live in a section of town that was once its own entity, but has since been absorbed into the neighboring city. The Village Association is its attempt [...] ... (more)

In another month or so, if all goes as planned, I’ll be out of credit card debt 100% for the first time in over a decade. The deepest I found myself was $29k in November of 2006. At the time, I was carrying around $l7k in credit card debt (down from $26k two years earlier) and I [...] ... (more)

It’s been a bit of a reality check for me adding my house to the assets calculation for my net worth updates. For the longest time, I was thinking, “What housing slump?”, but now I see it first hand. Already this month, I’ve seen the value of my home drop 5-figures. Ouch. It’s tough to get [...] ... (more)

Recently my wife has been expressing interest in paying some of the bills. But I’m reluctant to change my ways as I’ve been paying all of the bills from my checking account, while keeping detailed track of everything, for over a decade now. It’s not so much that it’s a habit, it’s just that I’ve grown accustomed [...] ... (more)

Last night while watching, um, American Gladiators on NBC, I saw a promo for a fluff-piece on the Today show about a blue man that would have aired this morning. My biggest bill each month, like a lot of people, is my mortgage bill. What’s funny to me, and probably me only, is that, of all of my bills, it goes back in the smallest envelope. Biggest bill in the smallest envelope. Those who hold their mortgage with CountryWide know what I’m talking about. Think they do [...] ... (more)

Okay, now what? Totally a fictitious question — I haven’t hit the contribution limits and don’t really expect to in 2008, but over the last few weeks, while crunching numbers to maximize my 401k contributions, my eyes were opened to the yearly limits placed on this type of retirement account. Around ten years ago when Roth IRAs [...] ... (more)

Being a Thursday and all, today was the first paycheck of the year. And, as hoped and expected, my tax filing status moves last week increased my take home amount even when I also increased my 401k contributions at the same time. No raise, but more money in my pocket and more money towards retirement… Net pay [...] ... (more)
