I have 3 financial goals remaining for 2008, and right now I’m the furthest along in my quest to eliminate Private Mortgage Insurance (PMI) from the mortgage. With momentum on my side, I’m eager to finish this one off, but is it the wisest move? Let’s see… The other two remaining goals are paying off the auto loan [...] ... (more)

I really liked the Planet of the Apes movies. Even the cartoon shows that they used to air. I still do enjoy sitting down and watching them, though more often than not, the Marky-Mark version is the one on television these days. I never did like Charlton Heston though, in the original or the Marky-Mark remake. He died [...] ... (more)

With gas prices on the rise, and likely to continue to rise, I’m sure you’ve thought about it. What, with all the press “going green” and hybrid models have received lately, it’s hard not to let it cross your mind. That’s right — plonking down some coin to get a hybrid vehicle to save money in [...] ... (more)

So Wednesday night, I ventured onto eBay again, except this time I wasn’t looking for a good deal… Finding myself with a bit extra in my checking account and without any credit card bills in sight (woo-hoo!), I took a big step backwards and went hunting for game worn hockey jerseys. My vice. I had one [...] ... (more)

Who doesn’t like to talk numbers? Sure, I’d much rather go over financial numbers this morning, but over the past few days, I feel I’ve beaten them to death. There isn’t much left to go over there until my next paycheck comes in. So for the first time ever, and like many other sites [...] ... (more)

By my calculations and over the trend of the past few months where my income has dropped, but stabilized, and after all of the monthly bills are paid, I should now find myself with roughly an additional $1500, on average, in my checking account each month for “daily life” expenses. Prior to this month, 100% of [...] ... (more)

As has been the case of late, almost in a routine fashion, the end of the month upswing in the markets has bailed me out of another negative month. The train keeps on rolling… not a single down month since July 2007 and that was due to a siding payment. I’d be shocked if I [...] ... (more)

Next to my desk at work, on the window ledge, I have a money tree. More often than not, my co-workers excitingly mistake it for a marijuana plant and move in for a closer inspection. Not sure what that tells you about my co-workers. When I tell them it’s a money tree, they kind of roll [...] ... (more)

I buy my pants on eBay. Contrary to what you might think, they don’t even come in a can. Yep, it’s true. For years, the jeans I wore weren’t exactly designer, but they weren’t from J.C. Penney either. I’d say I was generally spending around $60-$70 on a pair of jeans. For the [...] ... (more)

With my credit card balances wiped out, it’s time to start putting some of the newly available money towards savings. My finances aren’t totally in order yet and it will still probably take another two paychecks before the shock of zero credit card debt sinks in. By then, things should be settled and back into a nice [...] ... (more)

Well, today is the day I’ve been waiting quite some time for. I just sent a $508.13 payment to Chase and effectively eliminated the very last of my credit card debt! I received my first credit card, the first one that wasn’t attached to my parents’ account, back in the summer of 1997. The very first [...] ... (more)

Connecticut might not be gaining people very fast, but it’s at the top of the pack when it comes to gaining income. In 2007, Connecticut not only remained the nation’s richest state — it widened its lead, a report today showed. Total income per person rose from $50,762 in 2006 to $54,117 last year — the [...] ... You hear about “the Fed” on every broadcast of the nightly news these days, you see his face more often than not in the graphic to the right of your local anchor’s head, but who is this guy? Where did he come from? Amazingly enough, Ben Bernanke came from South of the Border… No joke. [...] ... (more)

Having just submitted payment for my auto insurance this morning (via an e-payment), all of the bills are now paid for the month of March. Nothing due to come in until the second week of April. Best of all, I only have $500 left in credit card debt and payday is this Thursday. Wow. Looks like I’ll be crossing [...] ... (more)

So I participated in my very first “Carnival of Personal Finance” this week and I have to admit that for the past few months, I’ve been avoiding all of the carnivals as they’ve always seemed a little goofy and essentially nothing more than, well, link farms… But I must say, it’s brought me some new [...] ... I’ve started putting together a few ideas for when the time comes that I’m finally in the black (excluding the mortgage). My first idea was sparked by a recent comment that Dedicated made on my posting about my rapidly approaching dilemma of uncertainty. After running the numbers this morning, over the past 36 months, I’ve been paying [...] ... (more)

You can’t win if you don’t play. That’s my problem. I don’t play. But for those out there who do play and are hoping to get rich via the lottery, here’s a story from Canada that may make you re-think the “lucky” numbers you select… 239 2nd-prize tickets cut payout Second-prize winners of Wednesday night’s Lotto [...] ... While paying down my debts, I’ve noticed that there is one thing that stands out more than anything else as being responsible for my success. I’ve been doing some calculations recently on how I’ve managed to pay down my debts as rapidly as I have. I’ve found that the pace seems to exceed my income — [...] ... (more)

Okay, okay, like President G.W. Bush, I spoke too soon. And I’m not referring to Iraqi freedom either… I’ve been working on eliminating my debts for years now. I’ve used quite a few methods to get to where I am, both good and bad, but now the end is in sight. I can see it. [...] ... (more)

There’s no telling how the market will react to the Fed’s rate decision and accompanying economic statement. Anything less than a full-point cut could trigger frenetic selling, while anything more could rekindle the feeling that the credit markets and economy are in worse shape than Wall Street thought. What? It’s nonsense like this that makes me wish [...] ... (more)

But it’s still a pig. Or a recession. Slowing economy. Credit crisis. Call it what you want, but let’s just put the lipstick down. I’m sick of all of action the Fed and the government has been taking over the past few months to try and feed the ecomomy. Save people’s houses. Bail out the banks… Even the tax rebate stimulus plan [...] ... (more)

I was really late jumping on this bit of technology. Back in December, I decided to consider abandoning the check book for most of my monthly bills. I updated the progress bars on the right this morning and you’ll see that I didn’t pay off the credit card balance in full with my last paycheck like I had originally planned on.
